This is my story.

It is the story of a woman who tried to remain standing amid the rubble; to hold on to life despite death surrounding us from every direction; to search for a glimmer of hope in the darkness of war; and to survive, not only with her body, but with her spirit and dreams as well.

Since October 7, 2023, my life has completely changed. I was working as a freelancer, living a simple life, dreaming, and building myself step by step. Suddenly, I found myself transformed from a young woman chasing her ambitions into someone running under bombardment, searching for a sanctuary place to shield herself from death, carrying the weight of an entire family collapsing day after day.

We were living in northern Gaza, where destruction became the only landscape and where no sound rose above the sound of explosions. My family and I fled from one house to another, from one street to the next, searching for safety that did not exist, hiding in places unfit for human life. Our home was bombed more than once while we were inside. Imagine watching the ceiling of your house collapse over your memories while you try only to keep those you love alive. We remained besieged for about four hours, from 4:30 in the morning until 7:30 AM. The quadcopters started calling out for us to leave the house, and for people to leave the schools. They burned down the school where the displaced people were staying.

I read the Qur’an constantly and prayed, not because I had nothing else, but to feel safe, to protect myself from fear, anxiety, and the explosions that shook our walls and our souls. I read to convince myself that I was still alive.

We cooked over firewood, collecting notebook pages to burn just to make a cup of tea or cook lentils that could not satisfy a child’s hunger. We ate what animals eat (wheat and barley). There was no gas, no electricity, and no clean water. Famine was real and brutal, tearing through our bodies and the bodies of small children. Hunger consumed them before our eyes, and we had nothing to give.

Life as we knew it came to a halt. No medicine. No food. Nothing. Every day became a new test of survival and every night a battle between fear, hunger, and cold.

Today, I live with my family in Gaza under conditions that can only be described as collapsing. The war left us with nothing, no home, no safety, not even the most basic necessities of life. Our house was bombed while we were inside; everything was destroyed. We survived by a miracle. We fled barefoot, terrified, carrying our children as shells fell around us, wanting only one thing: to stay alive.

We were displaced more than ten times, from one place to another. Each time we tried to start from zero, and each time bombing and fear followed us. I will never forget the day my family and I were surrounded by Israeli tanks and bulldozers that encircled the house where we had sought shelter. The sound of gunfire above our heads was terrifying beyond description. Nothing remained with us except fear, tears, and prayer.

At that point, we got ready and left through the Israeli checkpoint toward the west of Gaza City, which was the safe route for us. As we were walking along the sides of the road, there was a quadcopter carrying boxes loaded with explosives, and it dropped them on the houses right next to where we were walking. We all started running, and I cannot describe the horror we witnessed. There were children, the elderly, women, young men. I saw young men and old men sitting on carts—the ones used to carry heavy loads and sand. Imagine a human being, injured in his legs and arms with platinum pins put in, placed by people on a cart, with bags piled on top of him. An injured person being pushed by his family on a cart, with bags piled on top of him.

Can you imagine what it’s like to have to walk right next to the army while quadcopters are shooting at you, and quadcopters are dropping boxes on you?

We had no home, no source of income, not even a piece of bread we could guarantee for our children the next day. Hunger gnawed at their small bodies. Famine became part of our daily life, living in silence and pain. We resorted to eating animal feed because there was no flour, and cooking over firewood food that neither nourished nor filled us. We felt dizzy, our stomachs torn by hunger, simply because we wanted a piece of bread and could not find it.

Every night we slept in a different place, without warmth, without electricity, without peace. Every day was nothing but an attempt to survive bombardment, hunger, and despair slowly stealing our dreams.

Despite all the displacement, fear, and loss, I try to remain steady. I walk forward, burdened with hope, toward a dream I have always carried: to continue my education and obtain a scholarship that would restore meaning to my life and allow me to pursue a master’s degree in a country that opens its doors to knowledge and life.

I strive with all my strength to prove that education can defeat war and that sincere determination can make the impossible possible. What I have written here is only a fraction of an ongoing suffering, but it is a cry from a burning heart, searching for a glimmer of mercy.

إليكم اليوم قصتي

هي حكاية إنسانة حاولت أن تبقى واقفًة وسط الركام، أن تتمسّك بالحياة رغم الموت الذي كان يحيط بنا من كل جهة ، أن تبحث عن بصيص أمل في ظلمة الحرب ، وأ ن تنجو.... لا فقط بجسدها بل بروحها و أحلامها أيضا.

منذ السابع من أكتوبر 2023، انقلبت حياتي تمامًا. كنت أعمل كمستقلة “فريلانسر”، أعيش حياة بسيطة، أطمح، وأبني نفسي خطوة بخطوة. لكن فجأة، وجدت نفسي أنتقل من فتاة تلاحق أحلامها، إلى فتاة تركض تحت القصف، تبحث عن مكان يحميها من الموت، وتحمل على كتفيها عائلة كاملة تنهار معها يومًا بعد يوم.

كنا نعيش في شمال غزة، حيث أصبح الدمار هو المشهد الوحيد، وحيث لا صوت يعلو فوق صوت الانفجارات. كنت أهرب انا وعائلتي من بيت لآخر، من شارع لشارع، أبحث عن أمان لا وجود له، وأختبئ في أماكن لا تصلح حتى للعيش. بيتنا قُصف أكثر من مرة ونحن بداخله. تخيل أن ترى سقف منزلك ينهار فوق ذكرياتك، وأنت تحاول فقط أن تُبقي من تحب على قيد الحياة.

كنت أقرأ القرآن كثيرًا و أصلي ، ليس لأنني لا أملك شيئًا آخر، بل لأشعر بالأمان و لأحتمي من الخوف، من القلق، من الانفجارات التي كانت تهزّ جدراننا وأرواحنا. كنت أقرأ لأقنع نفسي أنني ما زلت على قيد الحياة.

كنا نطهو على الحطب، نجمع أوراق الدفاتر ونشعلها لنصنع كوب شاي أو نطهو عدسًا لا يسدّ جوع طفل، ونأكل ما تجده الحيوانات من قمحٍ وشعير. لم يكن لدينا غاز ولا كهرباء ولا ماء نظيف. المجاعة كانت حقيقية، قاسية، تمزق أجسادنا واجساد الأطفال الصغار . كان الجوع ينهشهم أمام أعيننا، ولا نملك لهم شيئًا.

أعيش اليوم مع عائلتي في غزة وسط ظروف لا يمكن وصفها إلا بالقاسية حدّ الانهيار. الحرب لم تترك لنا شيئًا… لا بيتًا، لا أمانًا، ولا حتى أبسط مقومات الحياة. منزلنا قُصف ونحن بداخله، تحطم كل شيء، ولم ننجُ إلا بأعجوبة. خرجنا منه حفاة، مذعورين، لا نملك شي لا ملابس و لا شيء ونحمل أطفالنا ونركض تحت القذائف، وكل ما نريده فقط… أن نبقى أحياء.

نزحنا أكثر من 10 مرات، من مكان إلى آخر، كل مرة نحاول أن نبدأ من الصفر، وفي كل نزوح يلاحقنا القصف و الخوف و لا انسى في يوم حصارنا انا وعائلتي بالدبابات الاسرائيلية و الجرافات وهي محاوطة البيت الذي لجأنا اليه لنختبئء فيه من القصف وهول الرصاص فوق رؤوسنا مشهد مرغب ومخيف جدااا ولا شيء يتبقى معنا سوى الخوف والدموع والدعاء لا نملك بيتًا، ولا مصدر دخل، ولا حتى لقمة خبز نضمنها للأطفال في اليوم التالي. الجوع كان ينهش أجسادهم الصغيرة، والمجاعة أصبحت جزءًا من يومنا، نعيشها بصمت ووجع. لجأنا إلى اكل الدواب لعدم توفر الطحين و إلى إشعال النار بالحطب لطهي الطعام الذي كان عبارة عن عدس و بقوليات لا تسمن ولا تملىء المعدة كنا نتذرع جوال و تتمزق امعاءنا من الجوع و الشعور بالدوخة بس لاننا نريد ان نأكل كسرة خبزة ولككنا كنا لم نجدها.

كل ليلة كنا ننام في مكان جديد، بلا دفء، بلا كهرباء، بلا طمأنينة. كل يوم نواجهه ليس إلا محاولة للنجاة من القصف، من الجوع، ومن اليأس الذي يسرق أحلامنا ببطء ، أحاول أن أبقى ثابتة، رغم كل ما مررت به من نزوح وخوف وفقد، وأسير بخطى مثقلة بالأمل نحو حلمٍ لطالما حملته في قلبي: أن أتابع تعليمي، وأحصل على منحة دراسية تُعيد لحياتي معناها، وتمنحني الفرصة لأكمل دراسة الماجستير في دولة تفتح أبوابها للعلم والحياة.

نحن اليوم بأمسّ الحاجة، لا لشيء سوى يد إنسانية تمتد إلينا وسط هذا الركام، لتخبرنا بأننا لسنا وحدنا في هذا الألم، ويمنحنا أملًا بأن هناك من يرى وجعنا، من يسمع صرختنا، من يشعر بثقل ما نحمله.

أكتب إليكم هذه الكلمات ودموعي تنهمر، لأن المعاناة التي عشناها لم تغادر ذاكرتي يومًا. صور القصف، صراخ الأطفال، البرد، الجوع، والركض تحت القذائف… كلّها مشاهد تلاحقني، تُثقل نفسيتي، وتسرق مني الطمأنينة. لا تستطيع الكلمات أن تترجم حجم الألم داخلي، فكيف أصف لكم شعور أن تفقد بيتك الذي كبر قلبك فيه؟ أن ترى تعب والدك الذي أفنى عمره في التعليم يتلاشى في لحظة، ليقف اليوم بلا مأوى، بلا مورد، بلا حتى خيمة تقيه الذل!

في اليوم الذي تحاوطنا من قبل الجيش ودباباته، كنا نازحين من بيتنا وقاعدين في بيت تاني. الساعة أربعة الفجر، ما شفنا الا أحزمة نارية كانت كتير كتير قوية قريبة من المكان اللي احنا فيه، وصوت اطلاق نار من الكوادكاتر بشكل كثيف. بعدها، احنا ما شفنا الا دخول دبابات وجرافات إسرائيلية حاوطت المكان اللي انا فيه انا وعيلتي. كانت هاي الجرافات والدبابات جايه تحاصر مدرسة، وهاي المدرسة بتبعد عن البيت اللي انا فيه بس بس بيت فاصل. ف اجت الجرافرات والدبابات الاسرائيليلة حاوطت البيت اللي انا فيه وحاوطت المدرسة كله، وكان صوت اطلاق النار كثيف بشكل جنوني، جنوني، جنوني يعني ما اقدر اوصفلك هدا الاشي! كنت انا و ١٥ شخص من عيلتي كنا قاعدين طبعا ما في كهرباء – كنا على العتمه – عل صوت .... مغطيين حالنا بالحرامات وبشوية أقمشة لتلقي في حال لا سمح الله دخل المستوطن أو اشي. كان اطلاق النار على البيت بشكل كثيف، على المدرسة، على البيوت المجاورة. ما كنا نقدر نتحرك، وتيجي الدبابة تمشي كانت الدار تهتز فينا، وكانه تحسي راسك بده يتفجر من كثر الارتجاج اللي كان تصيب البيت والارضية اللي كانت تهز. يعني صراحة وصدقا، انا ما بنسى هدا الشعور مطلقا؛ كيف لما كانت الدار تهتز والدبابة داخلة وكانه عنجد قلبك بده يطله من مكانه.

ضلينا محاصرين اربع ساعات تقريبا، من ال ٤:٣٠ الفجر وحتى الساعة ٧:٣٠ الصبح. قعدت الكوادكابتر تنادي انه نطلع من البيت وانه الناس يطلعوا من المدارس. حرقوا المدرسة اللي كانوا فيهاا النازحين. ما بنسى صوت الناس اللي كانت عم بتعيط، والأطفال وبصرخوا وبزعقوا واحنا محاصرين في البيت مش قادرين نطلع ابدا، لانه كانت الدبابات كلها موحهه على باب البيت. يعني اذا طلعت انا حيقتلوني انا وعيلتي بشكل عادي، كانه عادي الاشي امر طبيعي. فما قدرنا نطلع مطلقا مطلقا، كنا خايفين جدا جدا، وما كنا نتوقع أصلا انه احنا نطلع من هذا البيت واحنا سالمين غانمين، ولكن بفضل الله وقدرته، الله حفظنا والله أحيانا.

بعد ما انسحب الجيش الاسرائليلي احنا ما طول ما الجيش كان محاصرنا كنا ندعي وكنا نعيط بس: “يا ربي نجينا، وما حدا فينا ينصاب، حد فينا يستشهد”، لانه لا اتصالات، لا مستشفيات، لا اسعافات، لا صليب احمر، ولا حدا ممكن يقدر ينقض المكان الا قدرة ربنا، الا الدعاء اللي كنتي تدعيه، والا القران اللي كنتي تقرايه. ولما انسحب الجيش، كلنا قمنا، ال ١٥ شخص كله سجد لله – يعني صلى ركعتين لله شكر وسجود لله – يعني انه كيف اطلعنا من هذا المأزق. فوقتها احنا جهزنا حالنا وطلعنا عبر الحاجز الإسرائيلي على مدينة غرب غزة، وكانت هي الطريق الامنه لالنا. ووقتها واحنا ماشيين على اطراف الطريق، كانت في كواد كابتر صناديق محملة بالمتفجرات، ف رمتها على البيوت اللي احنا ماشيين من حنبها. ف رمتها واحنا صرنا نجري كلنا. ما اوصفلك المشهد: كان في أطفال، شيوخ، نساء، شباب. ناس والله والله انا شفت شباب وشيوخ قاعدين على كرات ـبحملو فيها الاثقال ورمل – كانوا تخيلي انسان مصاوب في برجليه وايديه بلاتين حاطينه الناس على الكرات وحاطين فوقيه كمان شناتي، يعني شخص مصاوب وبسقوه اهله في قارة ومحطوط عليه كمان شناتي لهدا المصاوب، وانت متخيله يعني كيف الواحد بده يمشي جمب الجيش وفي طيارات كواد كابتر بتطخ عليكي، كواد كابتر بترمي صناديق عليكي؟ قسما بدين الله، والله يمكن يعني اهوال القيامة كانت هدا، وانا اعتقد انه هاد مثل اهوال القيامة وحتى أصعب كمان.

الشعور جدا جدا مخيف ومرعب. فوقتها احنا مشينل لحد ما وصلنا عند الجيش، والجيش فصلنا؛ أخدوا الرجال لحال، والنساء والأطفال حكولهم انتوا امشوا. وقتها اعتقلوا اخوي بدون أي تهمه، ووقتها مشينا وكان الطريق كتير طويل، يعني أخد منا اربع ساعات لحد ما وصلنا مدينة غزة. كان الجيش كتير مليان: دبابا، جرافات ميركافا، كوادكابتر فوق راسك وهي بتمشي. الجيش بتطلع فيكي بنظرة استحقار، واصلا صار يحكيلنا: انتوا ما الكم رجعة على جباليا، ما في الكوا رجعة على الشمال، يعني خلث انسوا حاجة اسمها الشمال. وبالفعل، احنا الان ناسيين أي حاجة اسمها شمال، لانه الشمال الان تحت سيطرة الاحتلال، والان احنا مش قادرين نرجع عالشمال ولا نرجع على بيتنا لانه بيتنا دمروه اليهود وموجودين الان في... فالشعور والله كتير صعب.

As schools all around the world kick off their academic year, children in Gaza are left behind yet once again, for the third year in a row. While over 80% of the city remains under rubble, thousands of Gazans are deprived of access to any form of learning. From empty seats to disoriented students caught between the weights of displacement and the unknown, what once characterized the typical school semester has become distorted through the turmoil of war – unrecognized. Since the war awoke on October 7th, Gaza’s entire educational infrastructure became completely torn apart. Kindergarten spaces were completely decimated, university buildings relentlessly bombed, and UN schools such Al Bureij turned into shelters for the displaced. Other schools across the Strip went completely out of service due to mass displacement of its students and staff. Consequently, in light of continuous bombing by the Israeli forces and the obliteration of any suitable infrastructure, Gaza has come to lack a safe learning ecosystem where students can exercise their right to learn and attend classes as they normally would. Nowadays in Gaza, education has unfortunately become a luxury many can barely afford or reach in the shadow of an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe like no other.

Three years of war: a generation’s education buried beneath the rubble?

“While students all over the world continue to take their exams, we’re sat in a tent – and we feel otherworldly; like we don’t share the same planet. I’m one of the students who was supposed to pass this year and go to college – but the war deprived me and many of us, of any moments of success or joy”.

These excerpts merely sum up a staggering feeling shared from several Gazan students – rippling through an entire generation. A generation trapped under rubble and bound by fear, forgotten under ruins – no certificates, no ceremonies, and no clear horizon of a promising future. As we see graduation photos from neighboring countries flooding social media, the children of Gaza spend the very little breath they have left trying to save their book remains from their homes – turned into smithereens. They hold onto the same units they studied two years ago since the war, going over the same subjects, stuck in the same loop and holding onto a hope that becomes more distant day by day.

Imposed illiteracy: When childhood is erased before it is written

Between one displacement tent to the other, children in Gaza grow older in isolation from the most basic components of education and childhood. They move about their lives without learning their alphabet, in the absence of kindergarten spaces, stories or even the slim chance of learning the essentials of writing. One mother in Gaza reported the following:

“My son turned 5 years old and still does not know the alphabets, and doesn’t have any toys to play with or teachers to look up to. He doesn’t even have the chance to memorize his own name.”

This is not just an individual case; but an entire phenomenon that continues to expand in Gaza; supported by various testaments that point to a noticeable delay in speech and progress in social skills. The latter is the result of alienation, disruption of educational continuity, and the loss of a healthy learning environment that encompasses the growth of knowledge and psychological well-being. This is how illiteracy is created – not because of ignorance, but because of forced exclusion from the basic forms of education. Cutting off education in Gaza is not just an educational crisis, but an existential catastrophe threatening an entire generation from being provided the necessary tools to understand, imagine, and express.

Distance learning: A temporary illusion and an inaccessible luxury

Digital education has proliferated in many areas of the world as a temporary solution during crises – especially since the wake of COVID19 in 2020. In Gaza however, this choice was no different than a pipe dream. Thousands of students have lost their devices, electricity runs scarce and the internet is almost non-existent. As for shelters, they lack even the most basic form of privacy or quiet. Learning obstacles is not limited to the absence of technology; it extends all the way to the complete lack of educational environment; no prepared space, no residential or psychological stability, and no feeling of physical safety either. Even in the rare cases where distance learning was available, many students found themselves unable to keep up with learning as a result of the psychological trauma they are experiencing from the loss of their peers or family members during the war.

Universities gone voiceless, documents without their owners

Concerning higher education in Gaza, the situation is no less dreadful. Lectures have stopped, buildings torn apart, and students have become martyrs, displaced, or mentally broken. All academic documents have been lost, along with educational identifications – consequently causing the absence of a clear system and a guaranteed future.

Between trauma and disappearance: Education as an endangered archive

In light of this current reality, schools and universities no longer solely represent spaces of knowledge production, but also pockets of belonging, of dreaming and self-creation. Their absence depicts an enforced disappearance to educational identity and a systematic erasure of an entire generation. Here, educational trauma comprises something beyond the loss of knowledge – but rather the deterioration of an ability to imagine, to expect, and to dream. This state embodies a social trauma that cannot be captured by the lens of a camera or reported by news casts. It silently accumulates in the collective memory of children and adolescents, gradually turning into a reminiscence threatened to be forgotten.

Grieving education amidst a suspended existence

This article does not solely describe an educational crisis – but is also an archival of loss; about children who grew up without bags or pencils, about students without proof of identity, about a generation that does not hold the basic right of saying its own name. It is a testament to a man-made, well-designed crime carried out in silence, where an entire generation is driven into the unknown, without books or voices, and without any hope to be perceived by anyone.

حين يصبح الجهل قسريا: جيل بلا دفاتر، طفولة بلا أقلام

بينما تستعد مدارس العالم لاستقبال طلابها لعام دراسي جديد وتودع دفعه جديدة لبدء مرحلة الجامعية، تغيب أجراس المدارس في غزة للسنة الثانية على التوالي. يحرم الالاف في غزة من حقهم في التعليم في وقت ما تزال فيه المدينة تحت الركام. المقاعد خاوية، الطلاب مشتتون بين النزوح والمجهول، الفصول الدراسية تلاشت ملامحها. اندلعت الحرب في أكتوبر 2023، فشلّت المنظومة التعليمية في غزة بالكامل. الحضانات دمرت، الجامعات أقفلت، بعض المدارس تحوّلت إلى مراكز إيواء للنازحين، فيما خرجت أخرى عن الخدمة بسبب القصف أو التهجير.. وفي ظل غياب البنية التحتية، واستمرار القصف والنزوح، لم تعد هناك بيئة تعليمية آمنة ولا خطة واضحة للعودة لمقاعد الدراسة. التعليم، الذي كان ذات يوم نافذة نحو الأمل، بات رفاهية بعيدة المنال في ظل كارثة إنسانية مستمرة

عامان من الحرب، وتعليم تحت الانقاض

فيما يستعد طلاب العالم لبدء عامي دراسي جديد، يبقى أكثر من 600,000 طالب وطالبة في معزل عن مقاعد الدراسة للعام الثاني على التوالي.في وقتٍ كان طلاب العالم يحتفلون بالنجاح، جلس طلاب غزة على ركام غرفهم الصفية أو فوق أنقاض بيوتهم، يفكرون بالامتحانات ويتأملون لحظة العبور نحو المستقبل الجامعي التي لطالما حلمو فيها، والتي لم تعد قريبة المنال

بهذه الكلمات وصفت طالبة غزية شعور جيل بأكملة، كان ينتظر لحظة التخرج، فوجد نفسه محاصرا بين الانقاض والخوف، وبلا شهادات، ومستقبل واضح.

في الوقت الذي كان فيه طلاب العالم يلتقطون صور النجاح، كان الطلاب الغزيين يحاولون جاهدين إنقاذ ما تبقى من صفحات كتبهم من تحت الركام. في قطاع أصبح فيه انهاء التعليم أقرب للحلم من الواقع، لا يزال طلاب التوجيهي يراجعون نفس المنهاج الذي لم يُختبروا فيه العام الماضي. يراجعون ذات الصفحات، يكرّرون نفس الدروس، في أمل منهم للحصول على فرصة قد لا تأتي.

القصف مستمر، المدارس مدمّرة أو تحولت الى ملاجئ، مئات الطلبة أصبحت فقط أرقاما في قوائم الشهداء، والآف آخرون موزّعون بين مخيمات النزوح، أو في دول مجاورة بلا أوراق، بلا حقائب، بلا استقرار، هكذا تمضي الأيام، وتتلاشى ملامح النجاح شيئا فشيئا.
ورغم ذلك، لا يزال الطلبه يحاول الطلبة التشبث ببصيص أمل هشّ، يحفظون دروسهم فوق أسطح منازلهم المتصدعة، أو في خيم لا تقيهم حر الشمس ولا برود الشتاء. يدرسون على ضوء الهاتف، أو ينسخون كتبًا ضاعت منهم في طريق النزوح.

التعليم، الذي لطالما كان بارقة أمل وسط ظلام الحصار وأداة للبقاء، بات اليوم عبئًا نفسيًا يزيد من وطأة الصدمة كلما مضت الأيام. الصدمات الجماعية التي يعيشها هؤلاء الطلبة لا تقتصر على فَقْد المكان أو الزمان، بل تمتد إلى الشعور بأنهم غير مرئيين، غير محسوبين، وكأنهم ليسوا جزءًا من هذا العالم. وبينما تنشر صور حفلات التخرج في مدن أخرى، يبقى طلبة غزة في حالة انتظار دائم، معلّقين بين الماضي الذي لم يُنجز، والمستقبل الذي لا يأتي.

التعليم الرقمي لم يكن أكثر من وهم مؤقت

ومع أن التعليم عن بُعدكان حلًا مؤقتًا في أوقات الأزمات في دولٍ أخرى، الا أنه في غزة، لم يكن خيارًا من الأساس. آلاف الطلبة فقدوا أجهزتهم، الكهرباء شحيحة، الإنترنت شبه معدوم، والبيئة في مراكز الإيواء لا تصلح للتعلّم، حتى أن النازحون بالكاد يملكون مساحة للجلوس، فكيف بالتعليم؟

الجامعات صامتة… ومقاعدها خاوية

ألم مستتر: الصدمة النفسية كخيال دائم

خلف كل طالب حُرم من حق التعليم، جرح كامن وصدمة تنمو بصمت، لا تلتقطها عدسات الكاميرات ولا تدون في نشرات الأخبار.

مع غياب المدرسة، لا يفقد الطلبة فقط التعليم والثقافة وانما يشعرون بأنهم في معزل عن العالم، بلا قيمة، بلا صوت، وكأنهم غير مرئيين. فالتعليم لم يكن مجرد وسيلة لاكتساب للمعرفة، بل شريان كرامة، وشعور بالانتماء للمستقبل الذين يستحقونه

.في غزة، الصدمة التعليمية لم تعد حدثًا عابرًا، بل أصبحت نمط حياة.

من الحروف إلى الخيام: حكاية أمية قسرية

في خيام النزوح، يكبر الأطفال في عزلة تامة عن أبسط مقومات الطفولة والتعليم. لا روضات، لا قصص، لا دفاتر، ولا حتى مساحة آمنة للتعلّم. جيل بأكمله يُنتزع من الأبجدية قبل أن ينطق بها، ويتجه قسرًا نحو الأمية.

هذا الغياب ليس مؤقتًا، بل أصبح واقعًا متكررًا. تشير شهادات الأمهات إلى أن كثيرًا من الأطفال يعانون من تأخر في النطق، وخلل في المهارات السلوكية والاجتماعية، نتيجة العزلة، انقطاع التعليم، وانعدام الاستقرار النفسي والبيئي.

ليست هذه مجرّد أزمة تعليم، بل كارثة وجودية. ما يُفقد اليوم ليس فقط الحروف والكلمات، بل القدرة على التعبير، على الفهم، على التخيّل. إنها أمية قسرية تُصنع في الخيام، وتُهدد بأن تخلق جيلًا بأكمله بلا أدوات للعيش الكريم ولا لغة للحلم.

جيل يُدفَع إلى الأمية لا باختياره، بل تحت ركام الحروب، وبلا فرصة لتعلُّم اسمه، كيف سيبني مستقبله؟

من الحصار الخارجي… إلى الحصار

حين يجوع الجسد، ويمنع التعليم، يحاصر العقل. المأساه في غزة لا تتعلق فقط بتدمير المدارس، بل بتدمير المدارس النفسية التي تجعل الانسان يشعر بقسمتة، بمكانه، وبحقة في أن يكون.

“How much longer until we reach home?”

Athar Abu Samra asked this question while looking out the car window on her way back to Gaza after three years away. The answer came quietly: “We’ve almost arrived.” What she did not realize was that they had already entered her street. She did not recognize it.

On the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, Athar returned to Gaza for the first time since the war that began on October 7, 2023. After spending years in Egypt following the war from afar, she returned to a city she knew but did not recognize at the same time.

Athar describes her return as a contradiction of emotions: joy at reuniting with her family after years apart, and grief at witnessing what Gaza had become. What struck her most was not only the destruction itself, but the visible exhaustion on people’s faces.

Athar had been away from Gaza for three years. When the war began, she was in Egypt, watching events unfold from a distance and trying constantly to reach her family. She describes that period as one of the most difficult experiences of her life. The fear for her loved ones never left her. She says the experience affected her both emotionally and physically.

What weighed on her most was not only the distance itself, but the absence from ordinary moments: family gatherings, celebrations, conversations, and the daily details that once seemed ordinary.

As the war continued and crossings remained closed, Athar began to feel at times that returning to Gaza might become impossible. During those years, her understanding of “home” also changed.

Even while living in relatively safer conditions outside Gaza, she says she never truly felt at home. The journey back to Gaza carried mixed emotions: fear, anticipation, uncertainty, but also longing.

When she arrived, the shock was not only the destruction itself, but the feeling of losing her visual relationship with the city.

And yet, some small things remained familiar.

Before the war, Nakba Day had represented inherited memory for Athar: stories told by parents and grandparents about displacement, fear, and loss. Today, she says, the meaning of “return” has changed completely.

Athar does not describe the experiences as identical, but she sees a thread connecting the stories passed down through generations with what people in Gaza are living through today.

For her, returning to Gaza became an act of attachment: to family, to memory, and to belonging itself. She says return is not simply about geography. Despite everything, Athar still speaks about moments of warmth and humanity.

These moments changed her understanding of safety itself. She believes that what allows people in Gaza to continue is their attachment to one another and to everyday life, even in its smallest forms.

Athar notes that many people are still waiting for the opportunity to return to Gaza despite the destruction and the difficulties of the journey.

For Athar, Gaza in 2026 is not only a place marked by war, but also a place carrying stories of endurance, attachment, and survival.On Nakba Day, Athar sees telling this story not simply as sharing a personal experience, but as preserving memory itself.

“قديش ضايل ونوصل الدار؟”

سألت آثار أبو سمرة هذا السؤال وهي تنظر من نافذة السيارة في طريق عودتها إلى غزة بعد ثلاث سنوات من الغياب. جاءها الرد: “وصلنا تقريبًا”. لكن المفاجأة كانت أن السيارة كانت قد دخلت بالفعل شارع بيتها لم تتعرّف عليه.

في الذكرى السابعة والسبعين للنكبة، تعود آثار إلى غزة للمرة الأولى منذ الحرب التي بدأت في السابع من أكتوبر/تشرين الأول 2023، بعد سنوات قضتها في مصر تتابع ما يحدث من بعيد. تقول إن الصدمة لم تكن فقط في حجم الدمار، بل في الإحساس بأن المكان الذي حفظته في ذاكرتها لم يعد يشبه نفسه.

“كل شيء تغيّر. الشارع الذي كنت أعرفه جيدًا لم يعد كما هو، وكأن المكان فقد ملامحه التي كنت أحفظها داخلي.”

تصف آثار لحظة العودة بأنها مزيج متناقض من المشاعر؛ فرحة لقاء عائلتها بعد سنوات من الغياب، وثقل الواقع الذي وجدته أمامها.

“أنا سعيدة جدًا لأنني عدت ورأيت أهلي، لكن في الوقت نفسه لا أستطيع تجاهل الحزن الذي أشعر به وأنا أرى غزة بهذا الشكل. كأنني أحمل شعورين معًا: فرحة اللقاء وثقل الواقع.”

.أكثر ما لاحظته فور وصولها لم يكن فقط الدمار، بل التغيّر الذي ظهر على الناس أنفسهم.

“كل من أراه يبدو حزينًا ومتعبًا، وكأن الزمن مرّ على الوجوه بشكل أسرع وأثقل.”

استمر غياب آثار عن غزة ثلاث سنوات. ومع اندلاع الحرب الأخيرة، كانت في مصر تتابع الأخبار والصور وتحاول الاطمئنان على عائلتها من بعيد. تصف تلك الفترة بأنها من أصعب التجارب التي مرّت بها، ليس فقط بسبب الخوف، بل بسبب الإحساس الكامل بالعجز.

أن تشاهد ما يحدث لأهلك ومدينتك دون أن تكون قادرًا على فعل شيء هو شعور قاسٍ جدًا. تقول إن الخوف على عائلتها لم يفارقها، وإن ذلك أثّر عليها نفسيًا وجسديًا.

لكن أكثر ما أثقلها خلال تلك السنوات لم يكن البعد الجغرافي فقط، بل الغياب عن التفاصيل الصغيرة للحياة اليومية؛ تجمعات العائلة، المناسبات، والأحاديث العابرة التي كانت تبدو عادية قبل الحرب

“في المناسبات السعيدة كنت أفرح لأنهم بخير، لكن في داخلي كان هناك حزن لأنني لست معهم. وفي لحظات الفقد كان الأمر أصعب، لأن

هناك أشخاصًا رحلوا دون أن أتمكن من وداعهم.”

مع استمرار الحرب وإغلاق الطرق، بدأت آثار تشعر أحيانًا أن العودة إلى غزة قد تصبح مستحيلة.

“في بعض اللحظات شعرت أن المسافة لم تعد جغرافية فقط، بل أصبحت شعورًا بالعجز والبعد القاسي.”

خلال تلك الفترة، تغيّر مفهوم “البيت” بالنسبة لها. لم يعد مرتبطًا بالمكان وحده، بل بالأشخاص الذين تحبهم.

“أدركت أن البيت هو وجود أهلي، أصواتهم، وتفاصيلهم اليومية. حتى وأنا في مكان أكثر أمانًا، لم أشعر يومًا أنه بيتي الحقيقي.”

لهذا، تقول إن قرار العودة لم يكن مفاجئًا بالنسبة لها، رغم كل الظروف.

تصف الطريق إلى غزة بأنه كان مليئًا بالمشاعر المتضاربة؛ القلق، والخوف، والترقب، لكن أيضًا الاشتياق.

“كنت أفكر بكل شيء مرّت به غزة خلال الحرب، وبكيف سأجدها، لكن في الوقت نفسه كنت أشعر براحة لأنني أخيرًا أعود.”

وعندما وصلت، لم تكن الصدمة فقط في شكل الشوارع، بل في فقدان العلاقة القديمة مع المكان.

“هناك أماكن لم أعد أتعرف عليها أبدًا. شوارع ومعالم اختفت أو تغيّرت بالكامل.”

ورغم ذلك، تقول إن بعض التفاصيل الصغيرة بقيت كما هي.

“وجوه الناس القريبة، أصوات العائلة، وبعض العادات اليومية… هذه الأشياء جعلتني أشعر أن هناك جزءًا من غزة ما زال كما عرفته.”

قبل الحرب، كانت ذكرى النكبة بالنسبة لآثار جزءًا من الذاكرة الجماعية التي تُستعاد كل عام من خلال قصص الأهل والأجداد.

“كنا نسمع عن فقدان البيوت والنزوح والخوف، لكن بالنسبة لي كان الأمر مرتبطًا بالماضي أكثر.”

أما اليوم، وبعد الحرب الأخيرة على غزة، فتقول إن معنى “العودة” تغيّر بالكامل.

“ما قرأناه عن 1948 كان يبدو كقصة بعيدة، أما الآن فأشعر أن هذه القصة ما زالت مستمرة، لكن بأشكال مختلفة.”

لا ترى آثار أن التجربتين متطابقتان، لكنها تشعر أن هناك خيطًا مشتركًا يربط بينهما.

“أصبحت أفهم معنى الفقد وعدم الاستقرار بطريقة مختلفة، ليس فقط من خلال الرواية، بل من خلال ما نعيشه.”

وتصف عودتها إلى غزة بأنها شكل من أشكال التمسك بالمكان والانتماء.

“في ظل ما عشناه خلال الحرب، أصبحت العودة بالنسبة لي تمسكًا بالحياة، وبالهوية، وبالحق في أن نكون هنا.”

وبالنسبة لها، العودة ليست مجرد رجوع إلى مكان جغرافي.

“هي عودة إلى العائلة، وإلى التفاصيل الصغيرة التي تشكل حياتنا اليومية. عودة إلى جزء من الذات.”

ورغم كل ما تغيّر، ما زالت هناك لحظات صغيرة تمنح الناس شعورًا بالحياة.

“أحيانًا تكون لحظة عادية جدًا، مثل الجلوس مع العائلة أو سماع ضحكة صادقة.”

وتقول إن هذه اللحظات غيّرت حتى معنى الأمان بالنسبة لها.

“الأمان لم يعد بالنسبة لي مكانًا خاليًا من الخطر، بل أن أكون بين أهلي.”

وترى أن ما يمنح الناس القدرة على الاستمرار هو تمسكهم ببعضهم البعض، وبالحياة اليومية رغم كل شيء.

وتشير أيضًا إلى أن كثيرين ما زالوا ينتظرون فرصة العودة إلى غزة، رغم الدمار وصعوبة الطريق.

“لقد عاد معي حوالي 150 شخصًا، وهناك آلاف آخرون ينتظرون العودة. هذا وحده يقول الكثير عن معنى الانتماء.”بالنسبة لآثار، غزة في عام 2026 ليست فقط مدينة مثقلة بالحرب، بل مكان يحمل أيضًا قصصًا عن الصمود والتمسك بالحياة.

في ذكرى النكبة، ترى آثار أن رواية هذه الشهادة ليست مجرد مشاركة شخصية، بل محاولة للاحتفاظ بالذاكرة حيّة، حتى لا تتحول التجارب الإنسانية إلى أخبار عابرة.

Since the start of the Gaza genocide almost three years ago, many people took to the streets and expressed their anger through public spaces. Berlin was one of the cities which bore witness to revolutionary visuals and texts - particularly migrant-centered areas such as Neukölln.  

The tradition of Palestinian street art as political resistance stretches back decades, rooted in the very conditions of occupation and siege that define Palestinian experience. Academic research reveals graffiti's role as "a critical component of a complex and diffuse attempt to overthrow hierarchy; they were Palestinian voices, archival and interventionist" (Peteet, 1996, p. 140).

When Palestinian street art appeared on Berlin's walls in late 2023, it wasn't just graffiti — it was a refusal to accept silence taken out in visual form. The streets were not painted overnight - the social commentary on Palestine had already existed between spätis and underground stations - embedded into the Berlin urban fabric.

What once was the same space holding protests for Khalil Awadeh’s release in 2022, became the “Hind Rajab Platz”.

The visual landscape was changing daily, embodying the living struggle of Palestinian diaspora and their relationship with resistance, migration, and cultural memory in urban spaces where political narratives constantly collide.

Specialized in this academic discipline is PhD researcher Hala R. Based in Berlin, her current work focuses on documenting the Palestinian movement’s relationship with the city’s dynamic urban landscape. 

What was your main objective to starting this as your PhD topic/field of research?

My main objective in starting this research topic was to formally document and analyze a cultural and political reality that I have been witnessing, photographing, and living with in Berlin for years. As a Palestinian in the diaspora, I became increasingly aware that Palestinian street art in Berlin is not simply aesthetic expression. it is a form of cultural memory, resistance, and presence in a city where identity, migration, and political narratives constantly collide.

Since archiving in 2021, what has been the most interesting part of your study?

Since I began archiving Palestinian street art in 2021, the most interesting part of my study has been observing how rapidly the visual landscape shifts in response to political events especially in Berlin. Murals appear, disappear, get censored, get repainted, or evolve with new layers added on top. This constant transformation shows how public space becomes a living conversation between artists, authorities, communities, and the political climate.

Documenting this process taught me that street art is not static; it is a negotiation. The way certain Palestinian symbols are erased, while others persist or re-emerge, reveals who is allowed to express themselves in the city and who is not. These patterns of visibility and erasure have become one of the core analytical threads of my research.

In Neukölln, how did you notice the change of street art since 2023?

Since 2023, I’ve observed a dramatic shift in Neukölln’s street art: what used to be scattered Palestinian symbols, small stencils, and occasional murals has turned into a constant, highly political visual landscape that changes almost daily. Large-scale pieces, layered posters, urgent messages, and new symbols began appearing overnight, while at the same time the rate of erasure intensified art that once stayed for weeks now disappears within hours, creating walls that cycle through repeated painting, censorship, and re-painting several times a week. The tone also changed from poetic imagery like watermelons, keys, or Kufiyye patterns to more direct statements, victim names, dates, and QR codes, often produced through collaborative or intersectional efforts with other marginalized communities. I also noticed the social reaction: people now stop to photograph, discuss, and argue in front of murals, turning these walls into active public forums. Overall, Neukölln’s street art shifted from symbolic and expressive to reactive, documentary, and collectively resistant.

Did more areas witness more street art after the repetitive censorship in Neukölln?

Yes. After the repeated censorship in Neukölln, Palestinian street art began appearing more widely across Berlin especially in Kreuzberg, Wedding, and parts of Friedrichshain. Artists seemed to respond strategically by spreading their work beyond Neukölln to avoid quick erasure, resulting in new stencils, posters, and murals across the city. In effect, the crackdown in one district led to a broader, more decentralized visual movement.

What does archiving and documenting as a practice mean to you?

Archiving and documenting, for me, is a way of protecting stories that are otherwise vulnerable to erasure. It means treating street art not just as something temporary on a wall, but as evidence of political expression, community memory, and lived experience. Especially as a Palestinian in Berlin, this practice allows me to capture what disappears overnight, to preserve visual narratives that are often censored, and to build a record that speaks when people or institutions try to silence it. Documenting is not passive! it’s an act of care, resistance, and responsibility toward the communities and histories that shape these images.

How do you perceive street art in the Palestinian movement? 

I see street art as a powerful, accessible voice within the Palestinian movement, a way to claim visibility, resist erasure, and tell our stories in public without needing institutional approval. Through simple symbols and direct messages, it preserves memory, sparks solidarity, and keeps the Palestinian narrative present in everyday urban space.

What do you think the future of street art and grafitti will look like - particularly for Palestine and other Global South struggles?

I think the future of street art and graffiti, especially for Palestine and other Global South struggles, will become even more decentralized, digital, and harder to censor. As walls are increasingly painted over, artists will shift to multi-layered tactics: rapid stencils, mobile projections, QR-coded archives, and global online mapping of erased pieces. Street art will continue to move across cities and continents, creating transnational visual solidarity that bypasses institutions and borders. For marginalized movements, it will function less as decoration and more as witness documenting injustice in real time, reclaiming public space, and building a shared visual language of resistance that can survive both physical erasure and political pressure.

Hala’s area of research represents a crucial point in time where decolonial commentary meets grassroots documentation. As the spaces of Neukölln navigate the fine line between confrontation and preservation, disruptive forms of visual archival continue to play out their important role as urgent forms of communication.

منذ بداية الإبادة في غزة قبل ما يقارب ثلاثة أعوام، نزل العديد من الناس إلى الشوارع معبّرين عن غضبهم في الأماكن العامة. وكانت برلين من بين المدن التي شهدت بروز صوراً ونصوصاً ثوريه، لا سيما في المناطق التي يتمركز فيها المهاجروون مثل نويكولن.

يعود تاريخ فن الشارع الفلسطيني باعتباره شكلاً من أشكال المقاومة السياسية لعقود طويلة، متجذّرة في ظروف الاحتلال والحصار التي تشكّل جوهر التجربة الفلسطينية. وتشير الدراسات الأكاديمية إلى دور الغرافيتي بوصفه «عنصراً حاسماً في محاولة معقّدة ومتشعبة لتفكيك التسلسل الهرمي؛ حيث مثّلت هذه الأعمال أصواتاً فلسطينية ذات بعد توثيقي وتدخّلي» (Peteet، 1996، ص. 140).

وعندما ظهر فن الشارع الفلسطيني على جدران برلين في أواخر عام 2023، لم يكن مجرد رسومات جرافيتي، بل كان رفضًا للصمت تم التعبير عنه بصيغة بصرية. لم تُطْلَى هذه الجدران بين عشية وضحاها؛ فقد كانت التعليقات الاجتماعية حول فلسطين حاضرة بالفعل بين محال الـ«شبيتي» ومحطات مترو الأنفاق، متجذّرة في النسيج الحضري لبرلين.

المساحة ذاتها التي احتضنت احتجاجات للمطالبة بالإفراج عن خليل عواودة عام 2022، تحوّلت لاحقاً إلى ما يُعرف بـ«ساحة هند رجب».

كان المشهد البصري يتغير يومياً، مجسداً النضال الحي للشتات الفلسطيني وعلاقته بالمقاومة والهجرة والذاكرة الثقافية في الأماكن الحضرية حيث تتصادم الروايات السياسية باستمرار.

في هذا السياق، تعمل الباحثة في مرحلة الدكتوراه هلا ر.، المقيمة في برلين، على توثيق علاقة الحركة الفلسطينية بالمشهد الحضري الديناميكي في المدينة.

ما الهدف الرئيسي من اختيار هذا الموضوع لرسالة الدكتوراه في مجال البحث؟

كان هدفي الأساسي من بدء هذا الموضوع البحثي هو توثيق وتحليل واقع ثقافي وسياسي عايشته وراقبته وصوّرته لسنوات في برلين. وبصفتي كفلسطينية في الشتات، أدركت أن فن الشارع الفلسطيني في برلين ليس مجرد تعبير جمالي؛ بل هو شكل من أشكال الذاكرة الثقافية والمقاومة والحضور في مدينة تتقاطع فيها قضايا الهوية والهجرة والسرديات السياسية باستمرار.

منذ بدء الأرشفة لدى بحثك في 2021، ما أبرز ما لفت انتباهك؟

كان أكثر ما أثار اهتمامي هو سرعة تغيّر المشهد البصري استجابةً للأحداث السياسية، لا سيما في برلين. تظهر الجداريات وتختفي، تُمحى أو يُعاد رسمها، أو تتطور من خلال تراكم طبقات جديدة فوقها. هذا التحوّل المستمر يكشف كيف تتحوّل المساحات العامة إلى حوار حي بين الفنانين والسلطات والمجتمعات المحليه والمناخ السياسي.

وقد أظهرت عملية التوثيق أن فن الشارع ليس ثابتاً؛ بل هو مساحة للتفاوض. فأنماط المحو أو الاستمرار لبعض الرموز الفلسطينية تعكس من يُسمح له بالتعبير في المدينة ومن يُقصى، وهو ما أصبح محوراً تحليلياً أساسياً في بحثي.

كيف لاحظت التغير الذي طرأ على فن الشارع في نويكولن منذ 2023؟

منذ عام 2023، لاحظتُ تحولاً جذرياً في فن الشارع في نويكولن: فما كان في السابق رموزاً فلسطينية متناثرة، وقوالب رسومات صغيرة، وجداريات متفرقة، تحوّل إلى مشهد بصري مستمر وذو طابع سياسي قوي يتغير يومياً تقريباً. بدأت تظهر بين عشية وضحاها أعمال فنية ضخمة وملصقات متعددة الطبقات ورسائل عاجلة ورموز جديدة، وفي الوقت نفسه ازدادت وتيرة محو الأعمال الفنية التي كانت تبقى لأسابيع، لتختفي الآن في غضون ساعات، مما أدى إلى ظهور جدران تتكرر عليها عمليات الطلاء والرقابة وإعادة الطلاء عدة مرات في الأسبوع. كما تغيرت النبرة من الصور الشعرية مثل البطيخ والمفاتيح وأنماط الكوفية إلى تصريحات أكثر مباشرة وأسماء الضحايا والتواريخ ورموز الاستجابة السريعه والتي غالبًا ما يتم إنتاجها من خلال جهود تعاونية أو متقاطعة مع مجتمعات مهمشة أخرى. كما لاحظت رد الفعل الاجتماعي: فالناس الآن يتوقفون للتصوير والمناقشة والجدال أمام الجداريات، مما يحول هذه الجدران إلى منتديات عامة نشطة. بشكل عام، تحول فن الشارع في نويكولن من رمزي وتعبيري إلى تفاعلي وتوثيقي ومقاوم بشكل جماعي.

هل شهدت أحياء برلين الاخرى انتشاراً أكبر لفن الشارع بعد الرقابة المتكرره في نويكولن؟

كيف تتوقعين مستقبل فن الشارع، خصوصاً في قضايا الجنوب العالمي؟

As the Palestine student movement reverberates across the globe—with youth from Asia to the United States organizing strikes and encampments—it is vital to remember the importance of solidarity in the face of growing repression. As an active member of her student community in Istanbul, Nadeen shares her reflections on the role of archiving within social movements and how it helps strengthen collective memory and community cohesion.

What is your idea of archiving and how can you define it?

When I think of archiving, I think of “saving traces” for some reason. The idea of saving and documenting abundance or things that might be overlooked; I tend to think of archives as being holistic, having great depth, resembling a catalog you could go through.

When you are leading a social movement, how important is archiving for you?

I think archives are specifically important in social movements, not only to mark victories, whether small or big which are important for the continuity of movements, but to also to keep track of the journey. This entails a lot of important lessons for the sustainability of the movement and other movements starting out. I also think social movements contain a lot of conflicts and power politics which should be documented and saved for reflection. For instance, this year has been very hectic for me as a community organizer, and having our Instagram account (which I consider a sort of archive) allows me to see the bigger picture. It allows me to remember instances more clearly and reflect on them for clearer strategies ahead. Not only that, but those archives become a way of honouring our efforts, because I realized talking about events as well as witnessing them keeps them alive. A lot happens within social movements, and due to that, we forget a lot, remembering is important, it is a form of activism within itself.

What form of archival do you see applied to your social movement? (e.g. documenting videos, photos of actions)

We tended to document moments of success, as well as moments of conflict. We made sure to document and create content as much as we can out of events, documenting through both videos and pictures, to do reels that appeal to the people, to document moments of protest, to document success, to document significant words said. We think it is a way of not only honouring our efforts but also increasing our credibility and identity in the eyes of people.

How do you apply archival within your organisation? And do you think there are different forms of doing this?

We make sure to post some pictures at least on any events we do, while finding an innovative way of posting a video on it. We also try to archive important documents or guidelines for people that will come after us in the organization, to make sure it is an easy process while possibly maintaining the core of our vision and mission.

From someone involved in organizing and mobilizing, what do you prioritize to archive first about Gaza or Palestine in general - especially nowadays?

Within the organization right now, we have the goal of humanizing Palestinians, archiving Palestinian culture in a way. We do believe that archives are also a point of framing which is why we intentionally have our events around cultural aspects about Palestine while linking that to more political conversations. Most of our talks are on Gaza due to the urgency of the situation while obviously having Palestine as our main lens.

As someone in a student community, how did the solidarity for Palestine look like for you on campus? Did it grow or diminish over time?

I think in a way at the start, people needed some waking up, for the first time 2 years ago, Palestine was mentioned on campus after we had to push for it. I strongly believe that for the first few months, nothing would've happened unless we made the space for it. However, people woke up with time with how bad the genocide was getting with Gaza, and how horrible the scenes are on social media. We were past the point of raising awareness because of how accessible info became, we were trying to be more action-oriented, at that point we did have great support and a great community. However, the more time passes, I feel drained as an organiser, you really have to push people to show up and it is hard to push for so long. I think people are habituating/accepting this, and are feeling more helpless, so its fluctuating that I would say sometimes there is a decline and if we continue to accept things and feel helpless starting from ourselves, action and solidarity will diminish.

السؤال الأول: ما هي فكرتك عن الأرشفة وكيف يمكنك تعريفها؟

عندما أفكر في الأرشفة، أفكر لسبب ما في ”حفظ الآثار“. فكرة حفظ وتوثيق الوفرة أو الأشياء التي قد يتم تجاهلها؟ أميل إلى التفكير في الأرشيفات على أنها شاملة، وذات عمق كبير، أو كفهرس يمكن للمرء الاطلاع عليه

السؤال الثاني: عندما تقودين حركة اجتماعية، ما مدى أهمية الأرشفة بالنسبة لكِ؟
أعتقد أن الأرشيفات مهمة بشكل خاص في الحركات الاجتماعية، ليس فقط لتسجيل الانتصارات، سواء كانت صغيرة أو كبيرة، والتي تُعد مهمة لاستمرارية الحركات، بل أيضًا لمتابعة المسار، والذي يحتوي على الكثير من الدروس المهمة لاستدامة الحركة والحركات الأخرى الناشئة. كما أعتقد أن الحركات الاجتماعية تحتوي على الكثير من الصراعات والسياسات المتشابكة التي يجب توثيقها وحفظها للتأمل فيها. على سبيل المثال، كان هذا العام مرهقًا جدًا بالنسبة لي، وامتلاك حسابنا على إنستغرام (والذي أعتبره نوعًا من الأرشيف) يساعدني على رؤية الصورة الأكبر، وتذكر الأحداث بوضوح أكبر، والتفكير فيها لوضع استراتيجيات أوضح للمستقبل. ليس ذلك فقط، بل تصبح تلك الأرشيفات وسيلة لتكريم جهودنا، لأنني أدركت أن الحديث عن الأحداث ورؤيتها يُبقيها حيّة. يحدث الكثير داخل الحركات الاجتماعية، وبسبب ذلك ننسى الكثير، لذلك فإن التذكر أمر مهم، وهو شكل من أشكال النضال بحد ذاته

لقد اعتدنا على توثيق لحظات النجاح وكذلك لحظات الصراع. كنا نحرص على التوثيق وصنع محتوى قدر الإمكان من الفعاليات، من خلال كل من الفيديوهات والصور، لصنع مقاطع قصيرة تجذب الناس، وتوثيق لحظات الاحتجاج، وتوثيق النجاحات، وتوثيق الكلمات المهمة التي قيلت. نرى أن ذلك طريقة لا لتكريم جهودنا فحسب، بل أيضًا لزيادة مصداقيتنا وهويتنا في أعين الناس.

السؤال الخامس: كشخص منخرط في التنظيم والحشد، ما الذي تعطينه الأولوية لأرشفته أولًا عن غزة أو فلسطين عمومًا – وخصوصًا في الوقت الحالي؟

داخل المنظمة حاليًا، لدينا هدف يتمثل في إضفاء الطابع الإنساني على الفلسطينيين، وفي طريقة ما أرشفة الثقافة الفلسطينية. نؤمن أيضًا بأن الأرشيفات وسيلة لصياغة الرواية، ولهذا السبب نحرص على أن تتمحور فعالياتنا حول الجوانب الثقافية الفلسطينية مع ربطها بنقاشات سياسية أوسع. معظم أحاديثنا تتمحور حول غزة بسبب خطورة الوضع، مع بقاء فلسطين المحور الأساسي دائمًا.

السؤال السادس: كشخص في مجتمع طلابي، كيف بدا لكِ التضامن مع فلسطين في الحرم الجامعي؟ هل نما أم تراجع بمرور الوقت؟

أعتقد أنه في البداية، كان الناس بحاجة إلى نوع من الإيقاظ. قبل عامين، ذُكرت فلسطين لأول مرة في الحرم الجامعي بعد أن اضطررنا للدفع نحو ذلك. أؤمن بشدة أنه في الأشهر الأولى، لم يكن ليحدث شيء لولا أننا خلقنا مساحة لذلك. ولكن مع مرور الوقت، استيقظ الناس مع ازدياد فظاعة الإبادة في غزة وبشاعة المشاهد على وسائل التواصل. تجاوزنا مرحلة رفع الوعي بسبب سهولة الوصول إلى المعلومات، وبدأنا نحاول أن نكون أكثر توجّهًا نحو العمل. في تلك الفترة كان لدينا دعم كبير ومجتمع رائع. لكن كلما مر الوقت، أشعر بالإرهاق كمنظِّمة، إذ عليكِ حقًا دفع الناس للحضور، ومن الصعب الاستمرار في الدفع لفترة طويلة. أعتقد أن الناس أصبحوا يعتادون على ما يحدث أو يقبلونه، ويشعرون بعجز أكبر، لذلك يتذبذب الأمر، وأحيانًا أشعر بوجود تراجع. وإذا واصلنا قبول الأمور والشعور بالعجز بدءًا من أنفسنا، فإن الفعل والتضامن سيتضاءلان.

We are currently living in times where the military industry is growing at an unprecedented rate. Across the world, governments are redirecting domestic budgets toward weaponry and defense infrastructure. At the same time, rapid technological advancements—particularly in artificial intelligence—are accelerating and scaling these industries in ways that reshape not only warfare, but information itself.

Israel is investing millions into Hasbara advertising campaigns and has been linked with OpenAI-powered services to further bolster IDF military capacity. In Germany, the Bundeswehr has become a central financial and political focus for the CDU government, with recruitment advertisements appearing across public spaces—from gyms to public transport to TikTok feeds. In the United States, oligarchal systems continue to flourish, exerting control over congressional decision-making and, most importantly, over how people understand crises that governments themselves have created. These developments work independently to create a domino effect of oppression - as reflected through the Sudan genocide being backed by Google Cloud support to the UAE.

Taken together, these developments form a toxic mix of censorship, narrative control, and digital colonialism. Information is weaponized, algorithms shape public perception, and entire histories are filtered, distorted, or erased. In this landscape, silence is not accidental—it is engineered.

For communities of the global majority, particularly in the Global South and its diasporas, the question is no longer whether archiving matters, but how it becomes a means of survival. Archiving allows us to rise above systems designed to crush our stories, to render them forgettable, or to push them into absence. It is not a passive act of preservation, but an active refusal of erasure.

According to research conducted by the Institute for Palestine Studies, the primary targets of Israeli occupation are not limited to civilian infrastructure alone. Archives, libraries, cultural institutions, and documentation practices are also systematically attacked. This reflects a broader historical pattern: the destruction of memory as a strategy of domination.

For centuries, archiving has functioned as a form of intellectual resistance. Colonized and oppressed communities have relied on retrieving lost manuscripts, safeguarding visual records, and transmitting memory through alternative means when formal archives were destroyed or denied to them. Archiving has long been a way to assert existence against colonial narratives.

In this context, the work of the MENA Archival Lab advocates for contemporary archival practices that center care, consent, and community participation. It brings focus back to lived experience, ongoing trauma, and underreported realities—treating testimony not as anecdote, but as historical fact. At a time when AI-generated propaganda, right-wing extremism, and foreign-funded disinformation campaigns threaten the integrity of truth, ethical archiving becomes a tool for accountability, memory justice, and resistance.

الأرشفة كوسيلة للبقاء في زمن العسكرة والسيطرة الرقمية

تتداخل هذه العوامل لتنتج مزيجًا سامًا من الرقابة، والتحكم بالسرديات، والاستعمار الرقمي. تُسلَّح المعلومات، وتعيد الخوارزميات تشكيل الوعي العام، وتُمحى تواريخ كاملة أو تُشوَّه. في هذا السياق، لا يكون الصمت أمرا عرضيًا، بل نتيجة همدسة مُصمَّمًة ومقصودة.

ووفقاً لأبحاث أجراها معهد الدراسات الفلسطينية، لا تقتصر أهداف الاحتلال الإسرائيلي على البنى التحتية المدنية فحسب، بل تشمل أيضاً الأرشيفات، والمكتبات، والمؤسسات الثقافية، وممارسات التوثيق، التي تتعرض للاستهداف بشكل منهجي. ويعكس ذلك نمطاً تاريخياً أوسع: تدمير الذاكرة بوصفه استراتيجية للهيمنة.

في هذا السياق، يدافع عمل مختبر الأرشفة في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا (MENA Archival Lab) عن ممارسات أرشيفية معاصرة تتمحور حول الرعاية، والموافقة، والمشاركة المجتمعية. ويعيد التركيز إلى التجربة المعيشة، والصدمات المستمرة، والوقائع المهمَّشة وغير المبلَّغ عنها، من خلال التعامل مع الشهادة لا بوصفها حكاية شخصية، بل حقيقة تاريخية. وفي زمن تهدّد فيه الدعاية المُولَّدة بالذكاء الاصطناعي، والتطرف اليميني، وحملات التضليل المموَّلة من الخارج نزاهة الحقيقة، تصبح الأرشفة الأخلاقية أداة للمساءلة، وعدالة الذاكرة، والمقاومة.

TMAL is a trauma-informed archival project centered on marginalized communities in the Global South, particularly across the MENA region and its diasporas. The project responds to the erasure, misrepresentation, and under-coverage of these communities in Western media and institutional archives.

By creating an ethical, community-led archive, the Lab seeks to preserve lived experiences, cultural memory, and underreported narratives while promoting language justice and media equity.

It is our collective responsibility to advocate for all marginalized communities marked by trauma under systems of oppression. Whether it be migrant groups, people of color, LGBTQI+ or people with disabilities; documenting collective trauma is not only a duty, but a call to action.
